Microchipping Your Pets

May is National Chip your Pet Month. Here are 5 microchip facts you may not know.

#1 Microchipping is a simple procedure.

A Vet injects a microchip between your pet's shoulder blades. The process takes only a few seconds and is similar to getting a vaccine. No anesthetic is used. In fact, this device is about the size of a grain of rice.

#2 Microchips do not replace ID tags.

Chips provide an additional method to reuniting with your lost pet. An ID tag can fall off, microchips are permanent and can not be removed.

#3 Microchipped pets are more likely to be reunited!

Dogs are 2X more likely to be reunited and cats are 20X more likely to be reunited. Microchips must be registered and kept up to date with your information.

#4 A Vet or Shelter Worker can help read your pet's microchip.

Take your pet to the vet or shelter to have their chipped checked. They will run a scanner over your pet. The scanner uses a low radio frequency to read your pet's unique identification number.

#5 Microchips are not tracking devices.

Unfortunately, technology has not yet developed tracking features for microchips. If you are interested in GPS location devices, look for a GPS collar or GPS tag.
